About This Spot

Step inside Katsuo + Kombu, and you're immediately wrapped in the quiet warmth of a thoughtfully appointed neighborhood spot where udon is the quiet star. Situated on Divisadero, this intimate nook hums with a gentle energy — the soft clatter of chopsticks, the murmur of conversations unfolding over bowls brimming with care and tradition. It's the kind of place where the pace invites you to slow down, savor each bite, and appreciate the subtle rhythms of a well-crafted meal shared in good company.

The small dining area creates a cozy intimacy, encouraging a feeling of shared discovery among diners. Whether you find yourself at the counter or a close-knit table, there's a grounded sense of connection — both with the food and the people who bring it to life. It’s the sort of spot where familiar faces quietly reappear, and the attentive staff instinctively remember your preferences without missing a beat.

At Katsuo + Kombu, udon noodles are anything but ordinary. The delicate chew of freshly made noodles rests in broths where umami notes deepen with every sip and slurp. Tempura, brilliantly crisp and light, brings texture and warmth that contrast beautifully with chilled versions of the dish — a refreshing surprise to newcomers. Veggie-forward options and rich, complex bowls showcase a thoughtful balance that appeals to a range of palates, inviting you to explore familiar flavors with new twists.

Drinks here complement rather than compete, from sparkling waters to craft Japanese-inspired lagers, creating an experience that feels both comforting and deliberate. Whether you’re easing into dinner with a refreshing sip or wrapping up a meal in contented quiet, the atmosphere resonates with a shared appreciation for the simple, considered pleasures of a well-prepared bowl of udon.

No line on Thursday evening at 5 pm. It was a bit hard to know what I was gonna get just from the menu but I loved the Yasaj Ten Bukkake. Took me a bit to adjust to the cold broth but The tempura was great.

Noodles had a great chew with tender pork and umami broth - what’s not to love? I’m usually not the biggest fan of eggplant but had no problem eating the eggplant soaked in the broth. Others at my table tried the cold udon and the tan tan udon and everyone thought it was pretty good! Small dining area means that a line will form outside during busy times (for a Saturday night close to opening time we waited ~30 min) but once you order the food comes out pretty quickly. They are very transparent about trying to get people in as efficiently as possible too so maybe not the best place for a longer meal.

This place is an underrated gem on divisadero. 1 - the udon is world class. I’ve eaten all over Japan and the West Coast and this is my favorite udon spot. The freshness and consistency of the noodles, the flavors, the variety of dishes - both cold and hot, and the execution are excellent. Try the pesto - absolutely incredible display of skill. 2 - the staff remembers us and always takes care of our family with great service. 3 - this is our go-to daddy-daughter date spot. Highly recommend.

I went to this restaurant expecting amazing food and my expectations were met! I got a plain udon with dashi broth and shrimp tempura that was perfectly crispy on the outside and had tasty shrimp on the inside. Others had specialty dishes that were more complex and looked very tasty. This was an amazing dinner and I would definitely recommend it!
